This third-generation family-owned East Harlem staple offers a soil bar, where customers can buy dirt, mulch and stones by the cup and a wide variety of recycled and repurposed planters. For Halloween this year, the expansive store stocked up on the rare, tropical bat plant (tacca chantrieri), named for its flying rodent-shaped flowers. “Your plant will react to how little or much you care for it,” owner Dimitri Gatanas says. “I always tell my customers, ‘There are no bad plants, just bad people.’ ”
